About Me

Hi! My name is Jenna Richards and I am a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado with a bachelors in Art Education, emphasizing in painting!

I have absolutely adored my time as an art teacher thus far. I’ve had the privilege of teaching art in a variety of settings, from public schools to private studios, and I bring a flexible, student-centered approach to every learning environment due to my unique set of professional experiences.

I earned my teaching experience through student teaching in a public school classroom, followed by working as an art instructor at a local studio where I guided students of all ages through hands-on, imaginative projects. I’ve also served as a long-term substitute art teacher, which strengthened my adaptability, classroom management skills, and ability to build meaningful relationships with students in a short time.

Currently, I work as a Registered Behavioral Therapist (RBT), where I provide one-on-one therapy to young patients with autism and other behavioral challenges. This role has been incredibly meaningful for me, as it has deepened my understanding of how to support diverse learners, use positive reinforcement effectively, and create inclusive, supportive classroom spaces.

Artist statement

As a painter, I specialize in crafting portraits that transcend mere representation. Through a meticulous interplay of light and shadow, I seek to capture the essence of my subjects, not just their physical features but the essence of their being. Each portrait is a journey into the depths of the moody human experience.

What sets my work apart is its luminosity. I am drawn to the allure of light, and I harness its power to infuse my paintings with an immersive glow. Through the subtle interplay of luminescent pigments, I create an atmosphere that envelops the viewer, drawing them in.

my teaching  philosophy

I believe that every student has the capacity for creativity, and my role as an art educator is to create an environment where that creativity can be expressed. My teaching approach is rooted in structure, empathy, and inclusion; principles that have been deeply informed by my work as a Registered Behavior Therapist (RBT).

As an RBT, I’ve been trained to support students with autism and other developmental differences using evidence-based practices such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). This experience has equipped me with a strong understanding of how to create clear, predictable routines, break down complex tasks into manageable steps, and use positive reinforcement to motivate students and shape behavior. These tools are invaluable in the art room, where students are asked to take risks, follow multi-step directions, and express themselves in vulnerable ways.

I integrate visual supports, differentiated instruction, and individualized strategies to make art accessible for all learners, including those with behavioral, social, or sensory needs. Whether adapting a lesson for a student with fine motor challenges or building in frequent reinforcement for a student struggling with focus and attention, I prioritize equity and support in everything I do.

Beyond behavior support, I believe in fostering a classroom culture of creative freedom, mutual respect, and self-expression. I balance teaching foundational skills with offering space for experimentation, allowing students to develop their own artistic voice. Art is not just a subject to me; it’s a powerful tool for communication, emotional growth, and connection.

My ultimate goal is to cultivate a space where all students feel seen, supported, and inspired to create.
